Our Pastor, Rev. Dr. C. Nozomi Ikuta

Rev. Dr. C. Nozomi Ikuta was born and raised in Cleveland and grew up in Brook Park. After attending schools
and working out of state, she returned to Cleveland in 1991.
Before coming to Denison, she served at the Service
Employees International Union, Local 3, and at the national offices of the United Church of Christ, both in Cleveland. She
also served as a pastor at the First Baptist Church in Enfield Center in upstate New York and as a program coordinator at
the World Council of Churches office in New York City.
Nozomi's
mother was born in Japan and came to the US in the early 1950s after World War II. After serving in the US Army, Nozomi's
father joined the rest of his family in Cleveland after their release from a concentration camp in Poston, Arizona. Her family's
experiences of war and discrimination instilled in her a concern for racial, social, and economic justice and human rights.
Nozomi graduated from Berea High School, Carleton College in Minnesota, Harvard Divinity School in Massachusetts,
and New York Theological Seminary in New York City. She and her husband James, who teaches science at Collinwood High School,
are the parents of two adult children. Nozomi's other interests include Taiko (Japanese drumming), Tai Chi (Chinese health
and martial art form), and going for walks in the woods.
